Horsham District Council’s dedication towards tackling climate change has been recognised by the Carbon Literacy Project with the receipt of our Bronze Carbon Literacy Award.

We have been hard at work training staff in carbon literacy and now a substantial number of staff has taken the training  including all our senior leadership team, as well as Cllr Colette Blackburn, our Cabinet Member for Climate Action and Nature Recovery.  Those qualified in being Carbon Literate declare a commitment to support carbon reduction actions both at work and at home.

Paul Anderson, Director of Communities commented:

"We're very proud to have attained the bronze certification as a Carbon Literate Organisation. We are committed to building upon this achievement and furthering our work towards achieving net zero for our direct emissions as a Council by 2030. This recognition motivates us to continue our sustainability efforts and to inspire other partners to join us in making a meaningful impact on the environment."

We plan to roll out this training later this year to parishes, neighbourhood councils and community groups across the District for those who are interested.

Why Carbon Literacy?

Carbon Literacy training will help our staff, parish and neighbourhood councillors, and community leaders to understand climate change and to know how to act upon it within their own work and communities, building on our work to become a net zero Council and District.

Attendees will need to pledge to fulfil at least two actions; one action they can do on their own at work and one group action that brings people together on a project at work or in their community. Once trained, they will be Carbon Literate Certified.

People taking the Community Leaders course can apply to the carbon literacy project to get a toolkit to share with others, to keep training going in the community.
