Food hygiene inspections

How we assess your rating
Food businesses are required by law to be inspected to ensure that they meet food hygiene law. We carry out inspections as part of the national Food Hygiene Rating Scheme.
The Food Hygiene Rating Scheme gives businesses a Rating from 0 (needs urgent improvement) to 5 (very good). Once inspected your business will receive a sticker showing your rating. It is your choice whether or not to display the sticker.
Currently eight out of every ten inspected businesses within the Horsham District achieve a high Rating of 4 (good) or 5 (very good).
At an inspection, scores are given for:
- Food hygiene and safety procedures
- Compliance with structural requirements
- Confidence in food safety management/control procedures
Any food business, no matter how small, can achieve a top rating of 5 (very good). You can read the hygiene requirements for businesses on the Food Standards Agency website.
A good rating is something to be proud of, so display your sticker and don’t leave potential customers guessing how seriously you take food hygiene, or worse, assuming that you have something to hide.
