Self-build and custom-build homes
Are you interested in developing or building your own home? If so please register your interest with us so that we can factor your needs into future planning policy.
- Self-build defines projects where an individual or group directly organises the design and construction of their own home or homes.
- Custom-build homes are where someone works with a developer as an individual or a group to help deliver their own homes. This is more of a hands-off approach, but homes are often tailored to match individual requirements.
We are legally obliged to keep a register of people who are interested in self build and custom build projects in our district. This was established in The Self Build and Custom House Building Act 2015.
We use this register to help us to identify and understand the demand for self-build or custom-build properties. We can then build this into future planning policies to meet the needs of our residents going forward.
More detailed guidance on the Self-build and Custom Housebuilding Act 2015 (as amended by the Housing and Planning Act 2016) can be found on the Department of Communities and Local Government website.
